History of Mykanos

Although archaeological findings date back to 3000 BC in the Neolithic Age in, the Ioninans from Athens are considered the island's first real settlers. They were followed by the Romans, the Venetians, the Catalans and the Ottomans, who each left their respective marks. Following the Greek Revolution, the island prospered and gained an international reputation in the 1930s. Close to the waterfont lies the monumental Kazárma Building, once the personal residence of the Greek heroine Manto Mavrogenous. Petros the pelican, the official mascot of Mykonos, is hard to miss.
